The UN proposed to create a joint contact group with Moscow and Kyiv on humanitarian issues, in particular on organizing safe humanitarian corridors from Ukraine for civilians, Secretary General of the organization António Guterres said at a press conference following talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The broadcast was hosted by the Rossiya 24 TV channel.
According to Guterres, it is necessary to open humanitarian corridors in Ukraine that “really would be safe and effective.” and which “would be respected by all for the evacuation of civilians and the delivery of the necessary assistance.”
“To this end, I proposed the creation of a humanitarian contact group that would bring together the UN, Russia and Ukraine to look for opportunities, open safe corridors with local ceasefires to ensure that these corridors are really effective,” said Guterres.
Guterres made such a statement after the appeal of the Ukrainian authorities. As Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Irina Vereshchuk said the day before, Kyiv asked the UN Secretary General to become a guarantor of the evacuation of civilians from Azovstal. in Mariupol, and also called on the UN to send representatives of the organization and the Red Cross to the humanitarian convoy.
Earlier on April 26, Guterres held talks with Lavrov in Moscow. On the same day, the UN Secretary General is to meet with President Vladimir Putin. Then, two days later, he will visit Kyiv, where he will hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
