EU Ambassador Markus Ederer arrived at the Russian Foreign Ministry, where he was summoned after Lithuania's decision to ban the transit of a number of goods to the Kaliningrad region. This is reported by the correspondent of “RIA Novosti”.

Earlier, the Lithuanian authorities banned the passage of transit trains with goods that fell under European sanctions by rail. The decision came into force on June 18. The Lithuanian Railway Service informed the regional railway about this.

This decision affected the supply of building materials, metals, cement and other goods to the region. It is also planned to ban the transit of oil and oil products at the beginning of December. The full list of goods prohibited for transit is published on the website of the administration of the Kaliningrad region.

The fact that the EU ambassador was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the head of the Kaliningrad region, Anton Alikhanov, said the night before. Alikhanov said that the issue of “sanctions blockade” can be resolved through diplomacy. He stated that the Russian Foreign Ministry would set “conditions” for the EU, but he did not specify what conditions he was talking about.

Alikhanov called the transit restriction a gross violation of the international obligations of both Lithuania and the EU, while the Russian Foreign Ministry protested to Vilnius and demanded that the restrictions be lifted immediately. Against the backdrop of these events, the head of the Security Council, Nikolay Patrushev, is on an official visit to Kaliningrad.

In response to Moscow's claims, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry said that the country complies with EU sanctions and does not introduce any unilateral and additional restrictions. They added that the transit of goods that did not fall under the restrictive measures of Brussels continues.
