China's decision to end cooperation with the United States in a number of areas in response to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan is acting irresponsibly, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said during a press conference in the Philippines.

Beijing's Suspension of US-China Trade dialogue on climate change will have long-term implications for the future not only of the two countries, but of the entire world, the head of the State Department believes. Blinken stressed that Washington is interested in maintaining channels of communication with Beijing and resolving differences.

Blinken also reproached China for taking measures disproportionate to Pelosi's peaceful visit to Taiwan. In particular, on August 4, Beijing began military exercises in the waters and air around the island, in which it launched 11 ballistic missiles. Five of them landed in the exclusive economic zone of Japan.

Pelosi flew to the island on the evening of August 2 as part of an Asian tour; she met with members of parliament of the partially recognized state and the head of Taiwan's administration, Tsai Inwenyi, called the main purpose of the visit of the American delegation to support the “bright and dynamic” democracy of the island. At the same time, she insisted, the trip was not about trying to change the status quo. The White House also emphasized that Pelosi's visit does not contradict the “one China” principle, according to which Taiwan, which declared its independence from China in 1949, is part of China, and not a separate country.

However, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called the arrival of Pelosi “a blatant deliberate provocation”, which was pre-planned by the American side. The ministry protested, saying the House Speaker's trip “greatly affected the political foundation of Sino-US relations, violated China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and seriously undermined the stability of the Taiwan Strait.”

On August 5, the Chinese authorities announced that they were imposing sanctions on Pelosi and her family and freezing cooperation with the United States on the repatriation of illegal immigrants, criminal legal assistance, combating transnational crime, cooperation in the field of drug control and climate change. In addition, China canceled negotiations at the level of the regional military commands of China and the United States.
