A court in Rostov sentenced an opera singer to 10 years for calling for rallies

The singer was charged under four articles, including the dissemination of deliberately false information and the use of violence against a government official. The UK found that he called for a rally against COVID restrictions in 2020

The Rostov Regional Court sentenced singer Vadim Cheldiev to 10 years in a penal colony, his lawyer Batraz Kulchiev told RBC .

“Today, the Rostov Regional Court found Cheldiev guilty on all counts, sentenced him to a total of ten years in prison in a strict regime colony. Today was the announcement of the operative part, we have not yet received a copy of the verdict, & mdash; said Kulchiev.

According to the lawyer, the defense will appeal the verdict, she insisted on the full acquittal of Cheldiev.

The singer was put on the wanted list and taken to the investigator in North Ossetia. After that, a case was opened against Cheldiev on the use of violence against a representative of the authorities (part 1 of article 318). He was accused of hitting employees of the center for combating extremism while being transported from St. Petersburg to Vladikavkaz. As a result, the singer was arrested.

In addition, at that time Cheldiev was fined 75 thousand rubles. according to part 9 of Art. 13.15 Administrative Code (abuse of freedom of information).

On April 20, in Vladikavkaz, about 200 people took to the square for an unsanctioned rally demanding an end to the self-isolation regime and the resignation of local authorities.

Kulchiev told Interfax that in total Cheldiev is charged under four articles of the Criminal Code – 213 (hooliganism), 280 (calls for extremism), 318 (use of violence against a representative of the authorities) and 207.1 (public dissemination of knowingly false information about circumstances that pose a threat to life and security citizens). Rosfinmonitoring has included him in the list of terrorists and extremists.
